The Perverse Incentives of a Progressive Tax System
A progressive tax system actually is good for politicians because it encourages the population to want larger government. A flat tax, everybody paying the same percentage would create a natural political break on large government. At least three of five quintiles have a vested interest in government largesse flowing away from them. The higher we push taxes, the slower the economy turns.
