Perfumes Are Very Powerful
In the past, people made much more use of perfumes than they do in present society. Good odors were thought to protect you from disease and also possibly to help cure injuries. Bad smells had a strong association with corruption - both physicalcorruption and ral corruption. If you're giving off a good scent, then you're associating yourself with saintliness. And with goodness. You don't want to give off a bad scent, because that means not just that you're unpleasant smelling, but that perhaps you're morally corrupt as well.
