The Evolution of Symbolic AI

John McCarthy was the person who developed LISP in the late 1950s. He came from a sort of formal mathematical tradition with recursive functions and things like this. Marvin Minsky, another character who was involved in that 1956 conference, he'd done his PhD thesis at Princeton about neural nets actually. People didn't really know quite what to make of it, but he'd started off in this more neural net learning.
