The human digestive system requires some fat in the meat. The human flesh they ate actually provided very little nutritional value. By this point though, Captain Pollard's boat and the shitty boat, they drifted about a hundred miles away from First Mate Chase's boat. So trying to buoy their spirits, Chase told his crew, because they're out there alone, that they would quote, not die sooner by keeping their hopes. Might as well smile while you're dying.
