For a long time, people thought that the dominant force was the sea floor spreading. But now scientists say it's the subduction that's actually dominant. This is where they're dipping underneath the surface of the earth and pushing plates apart. And I think some of this boiling is also what makes the earth magnetic field too - isn't it?
