In a way, the state has kind of been turned into a giant firm. The rich people, the investors who can direct their investment to whichever state treats them in the way that they best like to be treated. And so what states do now is they compete for customers, i.e. billionaire money, and the taxpayers,. citizens of states are rendered workers through that mechanism.
