The Importance of Formal Democracy
How do we shore up the fact that so many people don't get a fair shot at a comfortable life? I'm still fairly hanging on as someone who believes that formal democratic institutions can do a large part of that work. What you need to manage there is a chan in identity. It's a change in who we are. And the fundamental problem is it requires politicians to give up control and power a little bit. You can't get everybody, but you can get enough people to build stronger institutions.
