Why Do You Want to Subsidise Private Schools
Private school fees have gone up by twice as much as inflation since 1997. This has priced out a lot of people who are middle class or GPs, local solicitors,. People like that can't afford private schools anymore. So it appeals to a very large number of people who have no chance of ever using this sector and think why are these schools getting tax breaks from it? It is a political judgment then. But I can see totally the logic of why you want to do what Ash describes as sort of safe left populism.
