Many critics speculate that Shakespeare wouldn't have had the most favourable opinion of Queen Elizabeth I. She was a tyrant but on the other hand she was objectively one of the greatest monarchs the country has ever had. After years of civil strife the country finally began to heal under her reign and we see that Elizabeth rained over a merry England in which holidays, feasts, festivals and sports were still cherished. This merry England was dying away a little bit towards the end of Elizabeth's reign especially with the opening up of the town and country divide. Over the course of the reign of James we see the rise of puritanical values and a mistrust of festivities. By the time of Shakespeare's death
