The Industrialization of the Donbass
In the 1870s, 1880s, this becomes the source of most of the coal for the entire Russian Empire. This industrialization combined with Catherine the Great's project of a new Russia means that there are essentially new cities in what's now Ukraine. And during the 19th century, Kiev and Harkiev, which are very old cities, are culturally russified. So as these cities grow, they become more culturally Russian. The new cities also are largely Russian-speaking.
