Introduction
Mendelssohn's fourth italian symphony is one of the best examples of someone doing just that. Each movement captures such a distinctive character while remaining mendelsonian to its core, warm hearted and full of bubbling energy. This brilliant amalgamation of a symphony in a tone poem was one of the first of its kind. And yet, when we finish the breathless terrantella that ends the piece,. we feel like we've been flicking through a photo album of felix's vacation, smiling mostly along the way.
