Thales was the first natural philosopher and influenced many schools of philosophy after him. He believed that all things were full of gods, even seemingly inanimate objects or alive or at least full of gods. His combination of mathematics and philosophy directly influenced the formation of the Pythagorean school. I would say that human beings collectively have only come up with four or five wise things in our history. What do you think the wisest thing human beings have ever said is? Write me a T-H-O-B-H podcast at gmail.com and let me know.
In this episode we begin a series on the beginnings of "Western" thought and science. We start with the catastrophy of the Mycenean Collapse, the Greek Dark Ages, and the Archaic Age, then continue with a discussion of Miletus and its most revered citizen, Thales. Thales has left his mark on the planet with his work. As a brilliant sage whose ideas were the beginnings of science, he helped set a trajectory for all future generations of philosophers and scientists.
