In 18 79 and 80, economic factors, poor weather and potato blight, sparked a famine in parts of ireland. This wasn't nearly as deadly or destructive as the great famine of the 18 forties and fifties but it did lead to hunger and hardship. Ernest's early education involved being taught at home by a governess. He was always known for reading literature and poetry while at sea.
