The Importance of Trusting the Server
Right now all DMs are with the luck they're encrypted at rest. I think we drastically, as a security community, underrate the value of if nothing else moving something from you trust the server and there's a database of everything on the server too. The choice not to implement well was deliberately to ensure that access to messages could be retained. There's no design document we can look at with a bunch of people looking at does it meet those goals? Those are promises being released at some point.
