There are three different types of meta awareness. You can go to the mindful witness and realize, Oh, that's a thought. I shouldn't touch the hot stove. There isn't. And then meta awareness could then pull back to a kind of choiceless awareness or big sky awareness where things are moving through it. So you're aware from both outside and within. That's how we start with this problem of having thoughts that fuel our anxieties and fears.
