The Importance of Alveolar Ventilation
You probably want to do less or no allowing of spontaneous ventilation, at least when they're intubated. Most of the blood that leaves the lungs goes immediately to the vessel-rich groups. The biggest vessel-rich group is the brain. So you're distributing your anesthetics to your target organ and that helps the patient fall asleep fast. We almost never do a mass-conduction with adults. It would just take a long time.
