A compositionality was initially defined as a property of language. The meaning of a complex expression is fully determined by the meaning of its con constituent parts, plus its syntactic structures. That's compositionality in the linguistic domain. In non linguistic representational systems such as images and wrote signs you can think of individual elements that are recombined with each other.
