Fiona Benson — Mama Cockroach, I Love You
Poetry Unbound
The Cockroaches, by Fiona Benson
There is so much about the life of the cockroach that's explored here. Fiona Benson completely undoes this word infestation by using all these other verb descriptions for it. The final line, someone must care for the dirt, feels like a dedication toward one of the things that a cockroach can do - release nitrogen which gets into soil and then nurtures plants.
