Voting Rights Act - Shelby County v Holder
The Voting Rights Act was passed in 1965 and it had two real components. One is section two of the Voting Rights Act which is a general prohibition against racial discrimination in voting. Two is section five of the Votingrights Act which basically states with a history of discrimination mostly in the south but also parts of the north like California and New York City recovered that had to ask permission from the federal government before they could implement new voting rules. In twenty three turn in a case called Shelby County versus Holder the Supreme Court all but invalidated section five ofthe Voting Rights Act.
