The book accumulates a fearful effect through a series of brief episodes presented with economy, strength and vitality or remarkable tight complete expression of the scene in our time. Hemingway let Perkins know that he could easily sever his connection with the firm by writing a book that Livright would be compelled to turn down. In closing, Perkins emphasized that if Hemingway happened to be writing something that would not raise practical objections to trade publication, Scribner's would like to consider it.
