How to Wash Your Hands in a Samovar
Cottage is set deep in the fruit forest, leaves and branches arched together overhead. Each of us pauses to wash our hands at a little cistern contraption supported on a post driven into the ground with a basin beneath. The steel cylinder shaped like a miniature samovar holds two or three litres. You punch a piston plug upwards with the back of one of your hands to let the water down as you wash them. It is like milking a cow.
