Edwin was an effective king of northumbria. He took over the surviving british kingdom of elmet, south east of york. Pender's later history showed that his attitude to christianity was equivocal. It was not for him, and he remained a determined pagan to the end of his life. But he allied himself with christian kings, and allowed his sons and his people to make their own choices.
