The Importance of Being an Experimental Investigator

The stakes start pretty low in this book. The only thing he really communicates to Mrs. Hall is that he's desperate to have his bags delivered from a nearby train station. When asked what an experimental investigator was, she would say with a touch of superiority that most educated people knew such things as that. He tells her: I should explain what I was really too cold and fatigued to do before, that I am an experimental investigator. She calls him the clock jobber who apparently repairs and maintains clocks. It feels like they're building up the suspense so we don't know what's going on - but the Invisible Man will be revealed soon.
