Hugo and the Catholic Church
Hugely popular French author had a long and antagonistic relationship with the catholic church. Hugo kept track of these attacks, claiming that there were 700. And forty times they criticized the novel in their pages. When hugo's sons died, hugo said, no priests and no crucifix.
