There's a beautiful book Zen at War that details what the Zen monasteries did during the Second World War in Japan, right? And some of them didn't. But a lot of them did simply mobilized to be part of the fascist war efforts and kind of recalculated the meaning of Zen to serve the army. Laman: There is a lot of skill development that was not going on in those monasteries that might have prepared them in order to handle that circumstance. Maybe you can't escape it.
