The Right to Wild Camp Without Permission Has Been Restored to Dartmoor
Until earlier this year, Dartmoor National Park was the only place in England and Wales where there was a right to wild camp without permission. That was until January when Alexander Darwell, who owns around 4,000 acres in Dartmoor, challenged that tradition. The case hinged on whether wild camping counted as open-air recreation - which is what the original law permits. And it kind of led to these completely ridiculous back and forths; landowner's lawyers argued that wild camping is not recreation because sleeping is not an enjoyable activity. Reasons why not now? I can see Keith laughing, but it's very important.
