The Principle of Utility
The principle of utility is a concise statement of bentham's overall moral theory. It says that in all circumstances, we are morally required to do whatever action will produce the greatest total of pleasure minus pain. So here's an example to sort of illustrate this: suppose i promise my three year old daughter that she can have a cooki later if she does something that i want her to do. If you're focusing on the principle of utility, and if i'm allowing that principle to guide me in making this decision, then it actually doesn't matter whether i've promised or not.
