In at least a few species, the fathers will cannibalize their own young. Deliberately avoiding eating your relatives means you have to recognize who your relatives are. By and large, if you grow up in the same nest as someone, there's a pretty good chance you're going to be related. So rather than evolve a way of figuring out if that individual you want to eat is genetically related to you or not, don't eat any one you grew up with.
