The Monk Narrative and World War II
Vietnam was the most uncensored war in American history at the time. World War II was the most censored war. In 1963, you would turn on the nightly news and there would potentially be footage of something like a monk emulating himself. That's what Malcolm Brown was thinking about when he took his Pulitzer Prize winning photo of Kwann Duke.
