Xenophon and the Skithanoi
Xenophon tells of the Greek invasion of Caledian territory in 400 BC. The 10,000-strong army was led by a local ruler who guided them through enemy territory. They were able to replenish their supplies at the large and prosperous Skithinian city of Gimnius. After resupplying they reached Mount Techus where they saw the Black Sea for first time.
