Natural Gas Transmission Pipes Are Not Mild Steel.
In electricity, transmission and distribution are well understood different things. In gas, a major gas pipe line that goes five thousand kilometers is distribution as well as the pipes that go from local utility to a person's home. And those pipes for natural gas are not mild steel. They're made out of harder steel. Natural gas is very corrosivety, and it doesn't really cause a lot of trouble to the metallurgy of pipes. So you want to use the material that is cheapest, cheapest per unit of value.
