Sparta and the Ten at Milita
The installation of the ten at milita was particularly cunning, and perhaps plutarch was right to see this as one of the moments where lysander revealed his true character. It was something a stodgy spartan traditional like calicratidas could never have pulled off, let alone conceived of. The greeks were an uncommonly independent minded people, jealous of nothing more than sovereignty over their own cities. And so they make preparations. Haven't we all seen enough now where democracy eventually leads the fruits of indiscipline?
