The Role of King and Country in World War One

The term for king and country is very important in war recruitment during the volunteering phase of the war before Britain has a conscript army. There's a sense of monarchy being really important in that first phase of mobilization. In 1917 we are finding evidence of troops starting to mutter about this idea, particularly after the Russian revolution breaks out. And into 1918 as well, there's an occasion where the king visits the front and the ordinary other ranks don't cheer.
