The epistle of Clement uses Greek words that we now translate as presbyters, deacons, and bishops without clearly distinguishing the roles. By the 90s CE, these roles existed in Christian institutions but surviving Christian writings of the first century don't hierarchize them. A critical mass of texts that we now have from late antiquity were written on or edited on the desks of Christian bishops.
