Malcolm's mother was left with eight children and no provider. She took jobs in white people's homes, cooking, cleaning and mending until inevitably her employer found out whose widow she was. Malcolm started stealing food every now and then, and eventually he fell into a habit of mischievousness. He got along fine with the family, but he missed his own family.
