Introduction
World food prices have risen 45% in the last nine months, according to the UN. In late 2007, drought in grain-producing countries coincided with a rise in the cost of fertilizers and food transportation. Together, these factors caused a dramatic increase in food prices around the world. CNN reported from riots in Haiti, including this one in April.
