The Rise of Prostitutes

In the 16th century, Henry VIII's royal proclamation ends England's tolerance for prostitutes. The Oirun or Taiyu were the highest rank of courtesan women available only to the wealthiest and highest ranking men. Prostitution was widespread socially accepted this time in Japan with different classes for different types of sex workers. In 1586, Pope Sixtus the 5th really ups the anti paid sex ante.
