Ghost Trail of the Labrador
In 1931, three years before the Newfoundland Rangers was established, HBC clerks encountered a ghostly team of black dogs with a driver outside Rigollet. Dr. Paden's log entry proves that despite all of the modern stories telling us that Gillingham became the elusive Phantom Trapper, the ghost of old Smoker was riding the stormy Labrador landscape at least two decades before he died. In 1984, 12 years after the publication of White Eskimo, Harold Horwood's popular novel, John Hood's story was renamed to Ghost Trail of the White Eskimo.
