Is It Worth Building a Third-Party Backup Management System?

The advantage of a third-party system is bring whatever stuff you have, right? So compatibility then across different functionalities. Is it worth building this entire orchestration of backup management software when you could just maybe do a ZFS send and send the data somewhere else and back it up that way? But I think it depends on what kind of flexibility you want.
