In the 10 years between when the war was started and when it was ended, massive political changes took place inside the Soviet Union. The biggest change was the election of Mikhail Gurbaychov as the general secretary of the Soviet Union in 1985. He introduced massive political and economic and social changes in the country wherein he'd loosened up all kinds of restrictions on what was allowed to be said in the media. By 1989, it was a totally different country. It was a much freer country. Descent was possible both outside the government and inside the government. And he was just a totally different leader.
