This wasn't unique to Britain at all. I mean, one of the most famous castles that you can go in and see these days is in Salzburg in Germany. They would find certain areas of high rock and they would build the walls around there to defend themselves. Then as European society stabilized under single rulers, the need for these castles listened and listened and listened. These kings used to be 50 feet tall and... Oh my god, wow.
