In Moby Dick, there's a famous sermon right in the early. I didn't fathom thought of written sermons as being an important genre. And what you're identifying is how McDonald reflects the sensibilities of the Victorians so much more than most other 19th century British literature. It's almost because people who've anthologized them want to defocus on the crisis of faith and move away from Christianity rather than to really capture what the majority of Victorians were enchanted by.
