gamma ray bursts have been associated with supernova explosions deaths of massive stars for a very long time and since 2017 we have one example where this association turns out to be true now. The first of the gamma ray bursts was observed by a military satellite that was looking for signatures of nuclear tasks on earth and got this strong gamma ray signal that turned out was not coming from the earth so there is some cold war history for the beginning of these events.
