What Is a Game?

A game is really anytime you challenge someone to a competition. We can make those craft activities a competition and therefore a game, but I'm not convinced that necessarily that has to be the case in order for them to learn well. If we're learning something new and we have to give it our full attention, then the prefrontal cortex gets involved again. And my understanding of skill acquisition from a neurological point of view is that things become what we might call autonomous when the neural pathways are so well established that the prefrontal cortex can be bypassed. So that's a really complex, at one level, it's really complex decision-making about is it a game, is it a drill?
