Meg Ryan says she uses archetypes to map out her characters' journeys. She has two decks of cards and a guidebook on how to use them. The show's creator, Steve Carrell, said the presence of an archetype is helpful like what's absent? What do they need by the end of the story? "I wanted each character to have an essential role," he said.
