CHAPTER

Gone Away by Elizabeth Bowen

Elizabeth Bowen's last short story, Gone Away, is a post-World War II story. She was an Anglo-Irish writer who wrote about the Blitz and war stories at that time. Her work produces a bit like Ian Forster with the Machine Stops - her kind of dystopian text. So Rip Van Winkle arrives late for his appointment with the vicar in what's called the reservation. You're also got echoes of Brave New World there.
