The Importance of Reconstruction

When the Civil War ended in 1865, it marked the beginning of what was arguably a bigger challenge. Up until 1863 with the Emancipation Proclamation, the American South had an economy and social structure entirely founded on white supremacy and chattel slavery. Reconstruction would also mean rebuilding state governments without allowing the slave holding and former Confederate elite to just return to the status quo antebellum.
