The need for the canal, and what and panama having onin that stability post independence, was really important. So to a large extent, panama had kind of operated on its own terms, but it always felt like it was being ignored by the larger columbian nation. Part of it is like its location, right? It's kind of like outlier. And for those who sought independence from this liberal party, there was this idea that they could effectively use this location in a way that columbia hadn't been able to appreciate.
