Dopamine and ADHD
People with ADHD don't produce as much dopamine as neurotypicals. Dopamine is a neurochemical that gives us that reward feeling. It's really fundamental to our drive system and drives us towards things. For people with ADHD, their whole nervous system is geared towards interest and passion. So it's actually so much harder for someone with ADHD to engage in a task that's not inherently or intrinsically interesting because unlike neurotypicals, they're not getting a little neurochemical cushioning while they do that. And this is where people with ADHD have often experienced this pervasive narrative that the reason that they don't do the thing is because of some internal moral failing or something that's wrong with them
