Jarman was one of the first public figures in the UK to announce his positive HIV status, and Blue never shines away from frank discussion of the health crisis. He spoke directly to the audience through a variety of narrators, including Tilda Swinton and John Quentin. In other mediums, Jarman blended the provocative and serene, provocation in painted works like Ataxia, AIDS is fun. And serenity, through gardening, something that brought him tranquility during his final years.
